Morning Matters:

The Week Ahead For October 5th

The S&P 500 finally had a positive week after four down weeks. The Russell 2000, NASDAQ 100 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were higher.

1.Geopolitical and Fiscal Events. The Senate appears to be shut down for the next two weeks as several GOP senators have picked up Covid-19 so it could be a quiet period. President Trump medical case with Covid-19 will drive news.

2.Economic Releases. Releases of note this week include the weekly chain store sales, oil/gas numbers, mortgage applications and jobless claims as well as ISM Non-Manufacturing Index, FOMC Minutes and NFIB Small Business Optimism Index.

3.Earnings Releases. Notable releases this upcoming week include PAYX LEVI DAL DPZ HELE AYI.

Monday, October 5

September ISM Non-Manufacturing Index is due out at 10:00 a.m. EDT and is expected to come in at 55.6% from 56.9%.

Tuesday, October 6

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will speak during the day.

Wednesday, October 7

The latest Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) Minutes are due out at 2:00 p.m.

The first Vice Presidential Debate happens between Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic Candidate Senator Kamala Harris in Salt Lake City, Utah at 9:00 p.m. EDT. Thursday, October 8

NFIB Small Business Optimism Index is due out at 6:00 a.m. EDT and came out last month at 98.8.

Friday, October 9

The latest NYSE and NASDAQ Short Interest is due out after the close for the period September 11th through September 28th. The S&P 500 rose 0.32% in that period.
